The dominance of Tencent and Ant Financial in China has driven a new type of business model, ‘the ‘platform ecology’ model. These tech giants have become platforms (or superapps), which offer their own products as well as third-party products to their customers. In these platform ecologies (ecosystems), third parties build products for each other as well as for the end customer of the platform. We will explore the economics of the ‘platform ecology’ model and how this is disrupting existing business models.
