New market entrants with the tools to leapfrog incumbents are aiming to redevelop the retail banking sector. Startup banks are offering retail banking propositions and slowly expanding their offerings as they desperately try to build scale and profitability. Most have struggled to do so in retail banking so are developing platform strategies for stronger value propositions e.g. connecting third parties to deliver financial products for existing customers, moving into SME banking, account aggregation and providing banking-as-a-service products for incumbent banks.

Are these startups a vision of the future that incumbents must learn from, or are they destined to become acquisition fodder or tech suppliers?
