Tech giants are moving into banking, leveraging their existing customer base and strong tech stack. Looking outside fee-income, these firms have focused instead on data acquisition, cross-selling opportunities and ways to add value to core business models. Their new tech stacks, which are open and API-based, are providing a source of competitive advantage. Most are experimenting with new tech to provide greater efficiencies in delivery and greater customer experiences.

Will the tech giants come to dominate their users' financial lives similarly to how they have tightened their grip on users' mobile activity, or will regulatory hurdles finally prove a stumbling block?
