Have you heard of Oriente yet? Launched by the former founding CTO of Lufax, Hubert Tai, the founder of BlackPine Private Equity, Lawrence Chu and the cofounder of Skype and Atomico, Geoffrey Prentice, this startup offering real-time credit scoring and online-to-offline lending in South East Asia raised $105 million out of nowhere at the end of last year. It’s now live in the Philippines and Indonesia, taking steps to launch in Vietnam and scaling fast thanks to investment from retail giant JG Summit Holdings from the Philippines, and members of Malaysia’s Berjaya Group and Indonesian telco Sinar Mas.

Born out of these illustrious tech founders and raised by these Asian family office powerhouses, how will Oriente’s lending proposition scale across South East Asia’s fragmented markets? What are the underlying technologies and models Oriente is utilizing to overcome KYC challenges and ensure speed and accuracy in the credit scoring process? How does Oriente’s bottom-up approach to financial inclusion compare to other last mile approaches to reach the underbanked from telcos to tech giants?
