Tech giants replacing legacy infrastructure: the super app model for banks
Many banks in China and globally are struggling to service customers effectively and efficiently across their physical and digital channels. One key challenge revolves around a legacy core banking infrastructure while others include the need to improve user experience or to leverage customer data across all channels. Competition from direct and indirect digital-first companies is intensifying as customer deposits and balances in current accounts become a key battleground.

There is a strategic move amongst leading tech giants in China towards becoming technology providers to banks, leveraging advanced cloud technology, AI, machine learning and data analytics. Some are referring to this type of proposition as a 'super app model for banks', enabling banks to cost-effectively improve their offering to customers both online and offline in a contextually seamless way. These new platforms also allow banks to manage customer data better and significantly reduce the complexity associated with regulatory compliance management and new product development. Hear the latest developments in the digital transformation of banking and find out how banks can build 'super apps'.

Twitter's research shows that Asian millennials are more likely to shop on mobile apps than Western millennials and, more likely to adopt mobile payment than their Western counterparts. Even for the mobile resilient categories, we're seeing an increase in consumers' intention to buy on mobile. As consumers warm up to purchasing even their furniture online, mobile commerce disruption is expected to go mainstream first in Asia.

The rise of nano-financing in Southeast Asia
Have you heard of Oriente yet? Launched by the former founding CTO of Lufax, Hubert Tai, the founder of BlackPine Private Equity, Lawrence Chu and the cofounder of Skype and Atomico, Geoffrey Prentice, this startup offering real-time credit scoring and online-to-offline lending in South East Asia raised $105 million out of nowhere at the end of last year. It’s now live in the Philippines and Indonesia, taking steps to launch in Vietnam and scaling fast thanks to investment from retail giant JG Summit Holdings from the Philippines, and members of Malaysia’s Berjaya Group and Indonesian telco Sinar Mas.

Born out of these illustrious tech founders and raised by these Asian family office powerhouses, how will Oriente’s lending proposition scale across South East Asia’s fragmented markets? What are the underlying technologies and models Oriente is utilizing to overcome KYC challenges and ensure speed and accuracy in the credit scoring process? How does Oriente’s bottom-up approach to financial inclusion compare to other last mile approaches to reach the underbanked from telcos to tech giants?

Building a bank from scratch
The threat of game-changing innovation and challengers disrupting the big banks is never far away, with both sides working hard to win the customers’ attention, engagement and ultimately, value. Where first the threat came in the form of FinTech start-ups, the new frontier is in the rise and rapid growth of the tech platforms, built to serve customers in every aspect of their lives, covering their everyday financial, social and retails needs in one, more convenient solution. In this session we'll hear from the bank fighting back and building thier own digital bank from scratch. Find out how Standard Chartered have approached this challenge in Hong Kong, how they are measuring their innovation and how they are navigating the changes required internally.
