In conversation with Tony Fernandes and BigPay
On this open stage, we’ll bring you face to face with the founders & CEOs that are shaping the industry. From a journey that started off with failure, as a medical student, the millionaire entrepreneur Tony Fernandes is best known for co-founding AirAsia. Fernandes bought the ailing, debt-ridden airline for a token RM1 and turned it around within two years, growing it from a domestic Malaysian carrier into Asia's largest, most successful airline group. Tony will share his entrepreneurial journey, diving into the tough lessons he has learnt along the way, and how he entered a saturated market and dominated it.

The innovation conundrum: Can banks build internally or do they need to partner or build a new entity from scratch?
Innovation is an often overused word. How can innovation be benchmarked and how should firms measure its impact? When incumbents look to innovate, do they have the culture and talent to do it themselves or do they need to partner or acquire to succeed?

Can an incumbent innovate from within?
As customer demographics and motivations change, so must banks. As legacy infrastructure begins to crumble, new foundations must be built on top of agile, interoperable, cloud-based tech stacks. As new market entrants - from FinTechs to tech giants - eat into banks’ market share, business models, organisational structures and internal culture must evolve. Top down transformation is the name of the game, and flexing to digital demands so much more than technological innovation.

The financial services landscape is changing with insurgents rapidly entering from tech giants with vast resources to agile FinTech companies. With customer deposits and importantly the touchpoint with the customers at stake, how can incumbent banks remain relevant? Thinking (and acting) win-win: strategic investments and their benefit for banks and their clients
How can banks stay in tune with transformative tech trends and how can new capabilities be integrated into a global bank’s roadmap?  HSBC is both working with a number of large technology companies in a strategic fashion whilst investing in Fintechs to create better customer propositions and internal efficiency.  In this fireside chat we explore how HSBC decides when and how to work with Strategic Technology partners, including smaller FinTechs, and how are they “learning by doing” through the application of new technologies for their clients. Andy will delve into the bank’s approach to machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud and distributed ledger tech.

The evolution of the challenger bank model
Shifting regulatory, technology, and ecosystem landscapes have created a period of immense competitive change in Asia as three new types of challenger banks emerge. Tech players are leveraging their strong tech stack and UX experience to build out financial offerings. Startups are building greenfield propositions, unburdened by legacy people, processes, and technology. At the same time, incumbent banks are creating digital-only subsidiaries designed to one day supplant their traditional businesses.

As each competes for the same customers and seeks to prove their model, which play will come out on top?

The Curious Case of: the existential bundling crisis
There is an ongoing discussion about the need for banks to start to “rebundle” services. This is especially apt where banking is under threat by e-commerce and alternative service providers. Open Banking is one answer to keeping banks relevant, but it is an experiment with an uncertain outcome. What can we expect from Open Banking as it washes over the globe? Well, we don’t yet know what cat is in (or has been let out of) Schrodinger’s proverbial bag. This is what we’re here to discuss, and this is why it’s important to understand all sides of the issue, facing bundling of one sort or another.

FinTech challengers
New market entrants with the tools to leapfrog incumbents are aiming to redevelop the retail banking sector. Startup banks are offering retail banking propositions and slowly expanding their offerings as they desperately try to build scale and profitability. Most have struggled to do so in retail banking so are developing platform strategies for stronger value propositions e.g. connecting third parties to deliver financial products for existing customers, moving into SME banking, account aggregation and providing banking-as-a-service products for incumbent banks.

Are these startups a vision of the future that incumbents must learn from, or are they destined to become acquisition fodder or tech suppliers?

Platform challengers
Tech giants are moving into banking, leveraging their existing customer base and strong tech stack. Looking outside fee-income, these firms have focused instead on data acquisition, cross-selling opportunities and ways to add value to core business models. Their new tech stacks, which are open and API-based, are providing a source of competitive advantage. Most are experimenting with new tech to provide greater efficiencies in delivery and greater customer experiences.

Will the tech giants come to dominate their users' financial lives similarly to how they have tightened their grip on users' mobile activity, or will regulatory hurdles finally prove a stumbling block?

Is it even possible to build an incumbent challenger bank?
Incumbent banks are building brand new subsidiaries that are digital-only banks to reduce cost base, provide enhanced offerings to customers, future proof their business and seamlessly comply with regulatory requirements. The driver is to compete with the tech giants and to a lesser degree FinTech startups. The play here over time will be to cannibalize their existing business and to gradually migrate customers across to the new subsidiary that has lower operating costs, cheaper customer acquisition and customer onboarding. The key source of value here is to capture, store and extract data centrally.

This session will provide a deep dive on the cost base of incumbents banking operations vs digital only banking products.

Building a bank from scratch
The threat of game-changing innovation and challengers disrupting the big banks is never far away, with both sides working hard to win the customers’ attention, engagement and ultimately, value. Where first the threat came in the form of FinTech start-ups, the new frontier is in the rise and rapid growth of the tech platforms, built to serve customers in every aspect of their lives, covering their everyday financial, social and retails needs in one, more convenient solution. It’s a step-change the banks are working hard to solve for and its driving a furious need to innovate to remain relevant, re-invent commercial models and experiment with new technologies.

In this session we'll hear from the bank fighting back and building thier own digital bank from scratch. Find out how Standard Chartered have approached this challenge in Hong Kong, how they are measuring their innovation and how they are navigating the changes required internally.

Dispelling innovation cliches
Building an ecosystem ripe for disruption from big data and AI trends using a SaaS-based model targeting the digitally-native, millennial generation... what does this mean?!

For every disruption that succeeds in building new businesses, affecting cultural change and collaborating across the industry, there are a myriad of overhyped, over-buzzworded initiatives that fall by the wayside. In this session our entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs will discuss their innovation pet hates and persuade the hosts to consign these hates to the FinTech abyss. Does this sound like a familiar TV show? Join us for our final session that will provide genuine insight on the industry terms that have no substance. We'll also provide a recap of some of the key insights from over the past 3 days.
